Motor Skills: Building Strength, Coordination & Confidence T

At PlayCircle Therapy™, we support children in developing the foundational motor skills they need for everyday life - moving confidently, using their bodies with purpose, and participating in the activities they love. Strong motor skills empower children at home, at school, and out in the community.

What Are Motor Skills?

Motor skills are the abilities that help children move their bodies in coordinated, purposeful ways. These skills develop through a combination of muscle strength, balance, coordination, sensory processing, and practice. When these systems work well together, children can move with confidence, accuracy, and ease.

We typically break motor skills into two categories:

Gross Motor Skills

These involve large muscle groups and include:

  • Balance and stability
  • Running, jumping, skipping
  • Climbing, throwing, catching
  • Postural control (sitting upright, maintaining good posture)

Fine Motor Skills

These involve smaller muscles of the hands and fingers and include:

  • Holding a pencil or crayon
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Buttoning, zipping, fastening
  • Handwriting and drawing
  • Manipulating small objects (puzzles, beads, blocks)

Both areas of development are essential for school participation, self-care, play, and long-term independence.

Why Motor Skills Matter

Supporting motor development is more than improving physical ability - it's strengthening the way a child participates in their world. Enhanced motor skills lead to:

  • Greater independence in dressing, feeding, grooming, and school tasks
  • Improved participation in sports, playground play, and group games
  • Better endurance and posture for writing, reading, and desk tasks
  • Stronger confidence and self-esteem when children feel capable and successful
  • Better coordination for academic tasks like handwriting, cutting, and using tools
  • Enhanced social interaction, as many social activities involve movement and motor play

When motor skills lag, children may appear hesitant, clumsy, avoidant, or frustrated during movement or fine motor tasks. Early support helps prevent discouragement and builds lifelong skills.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Motor Skill Support

Gross Motor Indicators:

  • Frequent tripping or bumping into things
  • Difficulty climbing playground equipment
  • Low endurance for walking, running, or active play
  • Trouble with balance or coordination
  • Avoiding sports or group games

Fine Motor Indicators:

  • Weak grasp on crayons, markers, or utensils
  • Difficulty with buttons, snaps, zippers, or tying shoelaces
  • Messy or illegible handwriting
  • Fatigue with drawing or writing
  • Challenges using scissors or manipulating small items

How We Supports Motor Development

Our approach is gentle, encouraging, engaging, and rooted in purposeful play. Motor development isn’t about drills - it's about building strength and skills through activities children genuinely enjoy.

1. Comprehensive Evaluation

We assess your child’s:

  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Bilateral integration (using both sides of the body)
  • Hand skills & grasp development
  • Postural control
  • Functional daily life skills

From there, we build an individualized plan based on your child’s unique strengths and needs.

2. Play-Based, Goal-Directed Therapy

Sessions may include:

  • Obstacle courses
  • Balance beam and postural control activities
  • Climbing, crawling, pushing, and pulling for strength
  • Ball skills training (throwing, catching, kicking)
  • Fine motor games (tweezers, lacing, building, puzzles)
  • Pre-writing and handwriting development
  • Hand strengthening activities (putty, pinch games, squeezing tools)

Every activity is designed to support real-life goals while keeping your child engaged and motivated.

3. Home & School Collaboration

We partner closely with families to ensure progress extends beyond therapy sessions. We provide:

  • At-home strengthening ideas
  • Classroom strategies
  • Recommendations for adaptive tools if helpful
  • Handwriting modifications or supports
  • Tips for developing independence during morning and bedtime routines

4.Confidence Building & Independence

We help children understand their bodies, recognize their strengths, overcome challenges, and learn to take pride in their progress. We celebrate every step forward - big or small - while setting children up for long-term success.

Everyday Activities that Support Motor Skills at Home

Here are a few ways families can support motor development between sessions.

Gross Motor:

  • Animal walks (bear, crab, frog jump)
  • Playground climbing
  • Ball play (rolling, bouncing, throwing)
  • Yoga or simple stretche
  • Pushing laundry baskets or carrying light groceries

Fine Motor:

  • Playdough or therapy putty
  • Beading, lacing, or stringing activities
  • Helping with kitchen tasks (stirring, pouring, peeling)
  • Drawing on vertical surfaces (easel, window, chalkboard)
  • Using clothespins or tweezers in games

What Progress May Look Like

Families often begin noticing:

  • Better coordination during play
  • Improved posture and stamin
  • Neater handwriting and better pencil control
  • Faster and more independent dressing
  • Increased willingness to try new activities
  • Less frustration and more confidence

Progress is unique to each child, and we celebrate each milestone along the way!
